Lower House Speaker, Atif Tarawneh, said Tuesday that Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, had passed some 129 “racist” pro-settlement and pro-occupation laws over the period between May, 2005 and March, 2017, some of which had been approved in their initial readings.

He said at the opening of today’s session that the House will write to Arab and world parliaments on the Knesset’s legislations.

Commenting on remarks by Israeli officials, among them the Knesset Speaker, in which they assailed the Jordanian legislature’s condemnation of Israeli closure of Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa Mosque/Haram Al Sharif compound, Tarawneh said he would withhold a response to the Knesset head’s statement.

“The suitable response is the result obtained in reality from addressing Arab and world parliaments to expose Israeli actions and violations, which spared no stone or tree in the occupied Palestinian lands”, he said.

“Let us assure the world as a whole that we, in Jordan, stand behind His Majesty King Abdullah and form a pillar of security and stability in the region, as His Majesty had repeatedly warned of the danger of undermining holy shrines and attempting to alter the status quo in Jerusalem, and of the catastrophes the region is witnessing as a result of the absence of a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue and Israel’s fortress mentality”, added the House chief.

He said Israel’s pursuit of extremist policies, represented in the installation of electronic gates for worshippers to pass through, is an alteration to the status quo, a measure that is rejected.

“It is worthy for the occupation (power) that instead of looking at the result of resistance acts, it should look into the reasons that prompt Palestinian youth to opt for the option of resistance as a result of the absence of a fair solution to their cause”, he added.

Tarawneh vowed that the House will continue its support of the Palestinian cause and the steadfastness of the Palestinian people, stemming from the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, a role Jordan is proud of as the Kingdom is defending the holy mosque, Islam’s third holiest shrine, on behalf of the Arab and Muslim world.
