In Mexico, 91% of journalist murders unsolved

Mexico\'s ombudsman said Friday 84 journalists have been murdered since 2000 and 20 more have disappeared in the past eight years, while authorities have failed to solve 91 percent of the crimes. The National Commission for Human Rights issued a report on World Press Freedom Day showing that the offices of 39 media companies have been attacked in the past decade. Of all the attacks on journalists, only 12 have resulted in criminal convictions, the commission said. The ombudsman urged authorities to give journalists the security they need to do their jobs and conduct efficient investigations into the crimes. \"The prevailing impunity encourages the aggressor, whether they are state agents or not,\" the commission said. Mexico has become one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists amid a raging feud between drug cartels that has left more than 70,000 people dead since 2006.
