Indian police: Gunmen ambush Kashmir patrol

Gunmen wounded at least two Indian paramilitaries when they ambushed their patrol vehicle in Indian-administered Kashmir's main city on Thursday, police said. "Two Border Security Forces personnel were injured when their vehicle came under fire from unknown gunmen," Ashiq Bukhari, senior superintendent of police in Srinagar, told AFP. A BSF official, who cannot be identified, said three members of the force were injured in the attack at Nowgam on the outskirts of Srinagar, one of whom was in a critical condition. The shootings comes barely a week after militants disguised as cricketers killed five paramilitary police in Srinigar in the deadliest attack for nearly five years. Violence in Kashmir -- a scenic Himalayan region which is divided between India and Pakistan and claimed by both -- had largely died down in recent years after a revolt began in 1989. But tensions have mounted since the execution last month of a Kashmiri separatist over a deadly 2001 attack on the national parliament in New Delhi.
