Israeli cabinet approves return of Lieberman as FM

The Israeli cabinet on Sunday approved the return of Avigdor Lieberman as foreign minister after he was acquitted from corruption charges days before, according to a statement. The cabinet's decision will be brought to the Knesset ( parliament) on Monday for approval, which it is likely to happen. Lieberman had to resign from his post nearly a year ago following charges that he inadequately promoted a diplomat who gave him confidential information about a police probe against him. Since January's elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has kept the foreign minister portfolio open, awaiting the result of his political ally's trial. Lieberman, an outspoken hawkish politician, will resume office once his appointment is approved by the Knesset later this week. It is yet to be seen what impact Lieberman's return will bring to Israel's peace talks with the Palestinians, on which he has repeatedly shown his skepticism.
