Israelis oppose unilateral attack on Iran

Israelis are mostly against a unilateral attack by their country on Iran even if diplomatic efforts fail to stop its controversial nuclear program, a poll carried out by Israeli daily Maariv revealed on Friday. According to the survey results, only 19 percent of Israelis support a unilateral Israeli strike threatened for some time by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\'s conservative government, while 26 percent favored a military action only if backed by the U.S. Twenty-nine percent of respondents said Israel should not take action at all, while 26 percent did not know the answer. The survey questioned Israelis on how they think Israel should react if foreign sanctions failed to stop Iran from seizing the means to produce nuclear weapons. Survey findings remain largely consistent with those of a survey published in March before the 5+1 group resumed negotiations with Iran to try and slow down its uranium enrichment. Several western countries suspect Iran is working on developing nuclear weapons, a claim Iran rejects and says it is only interested in generating electricity and other peaceful purposes.
