Japan concerned over clashes in Lebanon

Japan on Wednesday voiced concern over clashes between security forces and militants in Lebanon\'s southern city of Sidon, while offering its support to the efforts by the Lebanese government and people for the settlement of the situation. \"Japan is deeply concerned by the clashes and also strongly condemns armed attacks toward the Lebanese armed forces,\" Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Yutaka Yokoi said in a statement. \"The Japanese government expects that all of the Lebanese people will make their best efforts to realize peace and stability in Lebanon and the entire region under the leadership of President Michel Sleiman,\" Yokoi said. According to media reports, at least 40 people, including 16 Lebanese soldiers, were killed and more than 100 others were injured in the clashes.
