Japan's Ambassador to South Korea Yasumasa Nagamine returned to Tokyo on Monday amid a statue raw which spiked tensions between the two countries.
Japan's government decided to temporarily recall its ambassador and another diplomat to protest the installation of a statue in front of Japan's diplomatic mission in Busan, symbolizing those referred to as comfort women.
Nagamine told reporters at an airport in Seoul on Monday that it is extremely regrettable that the statue has been placed in front of the building, Japan's broadcaster (NHK World) reported.
The ambassador said that he will discuss the issue with officials concerned after reaching home.
Japan is calling on South Korea to remove the statues, saying it runs counter to a 2015 bilateral agreement.
South Korean officials have not announced any concrete measures to address the issue of the statues. They fear people in South Korea will react harshly if they remove the new statue.
A similar statue was installed in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul.
