The main opposition in Japan formally launched on Sunday the new party formed through a merger with a smaller opposition group.
The merger plan was announced in February with an aim to boost the opposition's chances during the upcoming election.
The new Democratic Party elected as its head Katsuya Okada, president of the former leading opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), state-run Kyodo News agency reported.
The merger of the DPJ with the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), announced last month, is an attempt by a fractious opposition to mount a bigger challenge in upper house elections this summer.
