Jordan interior minister, IOM chief discuss Syrian refugees

Minister of Interior and Minister of Municipal Affairs, Hussein Majali, on Monday discussed with Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), William Swing, and the accompanying delegation means of addressing the repercussions of the Syrian crisis, and its economic and humanitarian impact on Jordan.Majali said Jordan needs the international community’s support to enable it to deal with the impact of the Syrian crisis, especially in hosting refugees and providing them health, educational and security services.“Jordan will not close its borders to the refugees, given its humanitarian dimension and Jordan’s principled stance,” he said.“The Syrian refugees are putting great pressure on the sectors of education, health, infrastructure, the labour market and on the country’s limited resources,” the minister added.Further, Majali urged the international community to support Jordan to enable it to continue providing services to the refugees.The IOM chief appreciated Jordan’s role in hosting the refugees and offering them services.He said he will inform the organisation about the Kingdom’s urgent need for financial and in-kind assistance to deal with the impact of the Syrian crisis.
