Jordanians protest after Israel holds Jerusalem mufti

A group of angry Jordanian youths demonstrated overnight near the Israeli embassy to protest against the Jewish state's detention of the mufti of Jerusalem, police and organisers said on Thursday. "Around 25 young Jordanians held a sit-in last night near the Israeli embassy to protest Israeli practices in Jerusalem," a police spokesman told AFP. The demonstration came hours after Jordan summoned Israeli Ambassador Daniel Nevo and MPs unanimously demanded his expulsion in a non-binding vote, responding to the detention of mufti of Jerusalem Mohammed Hussein. "Dozens of members of political parties and youth movements held the one-hour sit-in to express their anger at Israel and actions of the settlers at Al-Aqsa mosque compound," Firas Qasas, one of the organisers, told AFP. "The people want to kick out the ambassador and shut down the embassy," the demonstrators chanted, according to Qasas. They also demanded that Jordan scrap its 1994 peace treaty with Israel, he said. Jordanian MPs on Wednesday asked that the government recall Amman's ambassador in Israel, Walid Obeidat. Israeli police questioned Hussein on Wednesday over a "disturbance" at Al-Aqsa mosque compound a day earlier, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. They released him six hours later without charge. The site, which sits just above the Western Wall plaza, houses both the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosques. It is also venerated by Jews as the place where their two ancient temples once stood.
