Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh took part on Monday in a meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly Bureau in Brussels. The meeting, called for and chaired by President of the European Parliament (EP) Martin Schulz discussed ways to enhance dialogue and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation as well as supporting the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in the coming period. Jordan will hold the Southern Presidency of the Union, while Europe will assume the Northern Presidency of the Union. The meeting was attended by Northern Representative of the UfM and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton. During the meeting, Judeh noted Jordan’s interest in the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, reiterating the Kingdom’s willingness to exert every effort to ensure the success of the Union during the co-presidency. He thanked member-states for selecting Jordan for this co-presidency, thanks for its moderate and constructive policy based on dialogue, mutual understanding as well as humanitarian and civilization co-existence. The minister underlined the importance of dealing “seriously” with regional schemes that constitute the main axis of the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation. He also stressed the importance of “providing all means to ensure the success of these projects, especially the provision of needed funding and encouraging European private sector companies to invest in these projects and create an atmosphere of dialogue that would contribute to strengthening cooperation among the peoples of the north and south”. The Parliamentary Assembly, Judeh affirmed, has a key role to play, as it represents one of the most important institutions that emerged from the Barcelona process of the Euro-Mediterranean. In a joint press conference with Schulz and Ashton following the meeting, Judeh reiterated Jordan’s commitment and support for projects that affect people’s lives, reflect positively on their living conditions and lead to tangible results they can feel.
