Kerry, Lavrov discuss Geneva-2 conference on Syria July 2

US Secretary of State John Kerry said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and he would discuss prospects for convening the Geneva-2 conference on Syria on July 2. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Kerry said he would meet Sergei Lavrov on July 2 to discuss prospects for convening the Geneva-2 conference, Barack Obama’s upcoming visit to Russia and his participation in the G-20 summit. The United States is concerned over growing violence in Syria, Kerry said. It is unclear yet the date and membership of the Geneva-2 conference. The disagreements inside the Syrian opposition itself complicate the situation. Certain representatives of the opposition are not ready to take part in the conference without precondition. To this end, Lavrov noted that Russia “relies on the efforts of the Western partners, primarily the United States, which obliged to get consent from the opposition”.
