Kuwait calls for cooperation with UN against terrorism

 The State of Kuwait on Friday called on the international community to face violent extremism and terrorism through "mechanisms of cooperation with the UN strategy" for combating terrorism and the UN chief plan on banning violent radicalism.

Mentioning five axes for this approach, the envoy to the UN, Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghnaim, said Kuwait focuses, in the first axis of its strategy, on prohibiting any linkage between these two phenomena with religions, civilizations, cultures, races or nationalities.

He was speaking at a senior-level session of the two-day Geneva conference for combating violent extremism, sponsored by the UN and the Swiss Foreign Ministry.

The second axis affirms necessity of mapping out international, national and regional plans to combat the violent radicalism, provided that this axis get integrated into the third one; creating a balance between the pre-emptive perspective, resisting extremism and the therapeutic approach, confronting terrorism, the senior Kuwaiti diplomat added.

The fourth axis, he said, aims to devote significant attention to the violent extremism which encompasses indiscrimination, racism, disdain of religions, hatred of Islam and the foreigners, occupation, with abstention from linking the issue solely to rights breach or lack of freedoms.

The ambassador delved into the fifth point; stressing on necessity of education, spread of awareness, tackling annihilating notions by promoting tolerance and human rights' respect.

For its part, Kuwait had already enacted a series of anti-terror legislations and joined the 1999 anti-terrorism international convention. Moreover, the Cabinet had established a special panel to implement the relevant UN resolutions.

Kuwait, as an active member in the international anti-Daesh coalition, had taken part meetings aimed at crushing terrorism.

Ambassador Al-Ghnaim called for a comprehensive approach to tackle violent extremism, not only on pure security bases, but also with regular pre-emptive precautions.
