
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Astana talks as an important step to solve the Syrian conflict.
In a statement made to reporters today, Lavrov added that the talks between the government and the armed opposition must work as an important step to settle the conflict. He also said that Turkey will be present through UN Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria, Staffan de Mistura during the negotiations held between him and the armed opposition in Astana, as he will supervise the talks.
He added that the next round of negotiations should be held in Geneva where a unified delegation from the Syrian armed opposition must be present, providing that the Syrian government will negotiate with all opposition parties, including the armed opposition.
Negotiation talks between Syrian parties are being held in Astana, Kazakhstan today and scheduled to run over two days. The talks are brokered by the guarantors of a nationwide ceasefire in Syria; Russia, Turkey and Iran.
