The Chairman of Liberia\'s National Elections Commission (NEC)James Fromayan announced on Sunday he was stepping aside in the interest of peace and to safe the integrity of the electoral process. Fromayan\'s disengagement from the electoral body has been one of the many demands from the opposition bloc. Fromayan\'s resignation blamed on recent letter addressed to opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), indicating mistakenly that the party won the highest votes in the first round of election, contrary to the final pronouncement of results by the commission which puts Unity Party of President Johnson Sirleaf in the lead. According to the Liberian Constitution, the NEC Chairman must be confirmed by the Senate. With the last Senate having expired along with the entire 52nd Legislature, it is not likely that a new chairman will be appointed before the November 8 run-off election.
