A Bosnian immigrant was sentenced Friday to life in prison for plotting a bomb attack on the New York subway system. Adis Medunjanin, 34, said he was not involved in the plot, but prosecutors said he conspired to use weapons of mass destruction and to provide material support to al-Qaida -- and then tried to kill himself and others by crashing a car after authorities foiled the plan, CNN reported. Prosecutors said during the trial Medunjanin had gone to Pakistan with two high school friends -- Najibullah Zazi, a Pakistani native, and Zarein Ahmedzay, originally from Afghanistan. They said he tried to join the Taliban, which recruited him for a suicide bomb attack in the United States. Zazi and Ahmedzay pleaded guilty in the case and testified against Medunjanin. Medunjanin chanted passages from the Koran during his statement at the sentencing hearing. In English, he criticized the United States for wars, hunger and torture, CNN said. His attorney, Robert Gottleib, said after Medunjanin was convicted he planned to appeal the verdict.
