Russia’s human rights ombudsman Vladimir Lukin spoke negatively about the conditions in which recently detained illegal migrants are kept at a special tent camp in northern Moscow. “These conditions do not comply with the government’s provisions,” he said. “Before extradited, those people should enjoy human rights.” Having inspected the tents, which are 20, Lukin saw only one of them was inhabited. There were 17 Vietnamese inside, and none of them spoke any Russian. The number of residents at the camp is expected to reach 900 shortly. The camp’s administration told the ombudsman that for the time being the detained illegal migrants did not have an opportunity to take a shower. As for the sanitary facilities, the tent camp has about 100 toilet cabins. Lukin promised to come to the camp once again in a week’s time to see how people would be staying there. “What they are and how they are kept there - I will surely tell about this to everyone involved, including the Russian president, if this topic is of interest to him,” Lukin said. While commenting on the situation, Lukin said “investigations should begin not from the top, but from the bottom - to find those who receive money for the work of those illegal migrants.”
