Majority of Dutch parliament members backs cabinet\'s position on Syria

A majority in the Dutch House of Representatives supported the position of the Dutch government on Syria to wait for the United Nations\' investigatons into the alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria, a debate in the parliament shown on Thursday. The Dutch government wants to await the findings of the UN investigators currently investigating the alleged chemical attacks in Syria. A majority of the parliament supported that idea. Michiel Servaes, Foreign Affairs spokesman of the governing party PvdA (Labor), considered early action against Syria even a \"no go\", while the VVD, the other party in the coalition government, preferred a resolution of the UN Security Council. \"I would regret action without proof,\" said spokesman Han ten Broeke of the other government party VVD. In addition, a majority in the parliament considered it a possibility that political or military support would be granted to military action against Syria without a mandate from the UN Security Council. The condition would be that irrefutable proof must be established that the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad was behind the chemical attacks and that everything has been done to create unanimity in the UN Security Council.
