Man arrested in deaths of New York cop, driver

A police officer and motorist were shot to death, allegedly by a parolee chased by police after leaving the scene of an accident in New York, officials said. The alleged gunman, tracked down Tuesday after a nearly 8-hour search involving hundeds of officers from two counties, was wounded, apparently by a self-inflicted gunshot, investigators said. Thirteen schools were locked down for at least part of the day because of the search, The New York Times reported. The first shooting victim was Nassau County police officer Arthur Lopez. He and another officer pulled over a driver about 11 a.m. Tuesday for leaving the scene of an accident and Lopez was shot after asking the driver to get out of the car, police said. The driver, identified as Darrell Fuller of Queens, then drove away and allegedly pulled over another car, driven by Raymond Facey, 52, of Queens, who was shot and killed, police said. Fuller left in Facey\'s car, which was later found abandoned in Queens Village, said Steven Skrynecki, chief of the Nassau County Police Department. The suspect was found about 6:45 p.m., shot in the torso in a minivan in St. Albans. Lopez, 29, died at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park Fuller, 33, was taken to Jamaica Hospital Center, where he was listed in guarded condition. He was on parole after serving less than five years for attempted murder, police said.
