Law enforcement officers have killed a militant who opened fire on them in the south of the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, the Russian Interior Ministry reported on Friday. The ministry said the militant was discovered during an operation conducted jointly with the Federal Security Service (FSB) and investigators. “The criminal was killed by return fire. No law enforcement officers were killed or injured,” the ministry said. An Islamist insurgency once contained largely to Chechnya has spread in recent years over North Caucasus, with attacks reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan and Ingushetia, as well as in Kabardino-Balkaria.
