
One in three Germans are in favour of reintroducing conscription in the face of growing security threats, according to a survey conducted for the German News Agency (dpa) by pollster YouGov.
Some 36% said they wanted to go back to compulsory military service, which was suspended in Germany five years ago. Just less than half of those questioned - 49%- were against a reintroduction, with 15% declining to comment.
Conscription in Germany was suspended on July 1, 2011, after 55 years, as the government did not see any justification for the military service, given no immediate threats to security. Compulsory military service remains part of the German constitution and could be reintroduced in the face of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and the rise of the ISIS group.
