Morsi supporters plan more marches, rallies, press conferences

Supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi are planning more activities on Sunday to show support for the deposed Islamist president. The National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy, a coalition of largely Islamic parties, said scholars and preachers will organize a rally Sunday from outside Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo after the noon prayer. The students union will hold a press conference at Rabee Al-Adawiya Mosque to discuss further escalations against the “military coup”. Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, was ousted by the military on July 3 following mass street protests against him and his regime. Thousands of his loyalists have since been staging marches, rallies, sit-ins and mass protests to defend his legitimacy and demand his reinstatement. A number of ministers who have resigned their post in protest at the army’s overthrow of the elected president are also planning a press conference at Rabee Al-Adawiya Mosque. Thousands of Morsi loyalists have been camping out at Rabee Square in the Cairo district of Nasr City in a show of defiance support for him. Morsi opponents are still camping out at the iconic Tahrir Square to show support for the army’s roadmap for the future of post-Morsi Egypt.
