Moscow court to hear case over libel against Cathedral of Savior’s Foundation

A court in Moscow is expected to hear a lawsuit against Mikhail Anshakov, the president of Obshchestvenny Kontrol /Public Control/ association for the protection of consumer rights, who is accused of spreading libel that targeted the Foundation of Moscow’s Cathedral of the Savior. More specifically, the lawsuit suggests that Anshakov spread libel against the chairman of the foundation alleging that the latter person had been involved in illicit transactions with the monies donated by believers for construction of the cathedral consecrated in 2000. A criminal case against Anshakov citing Clause 2 of Article 128.1 of Russia’s Criminal Code /Libel/ was instituted after his interview with a Moscow-based newspaper. If found guilty, the man may face maximum punishment of 240 hours of corrective labor.
