The military-backed government on Wednesday designated the decades-long Brotherhood as a “terrorist group” The International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS) has condemned an Egyptian move to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a “terrorist group”, saying the decision “closes doors to a peaceful solution” of Egypt’s crisis. “The decision aims to justify the confiscation of the Brotherhood’s funds, convict members and undermine the group’s political future,” the IUMS said in a statement on Saturday. It urged “all Islamic and national groups in Egypt to reject the decision in order to preserve Egypt’s future and security”. The military-backed government on Wednesday designated the decades-long Brotherhood as a “terrorist group”. The move came one day after a deadly bombing struck a security headquarters in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura, killing 16 people, mostly policemen. Egypt has remained in turmoil since the military establishment removed elected president Mohamed Morsi, a Brotherhood member, on July 3 following mass protests against his rule.
