NATO representatives meet in Istanbul to discuss cooperation

The NATO Industry Forum commenced in Turkey's capital on Thursday as about 300 representatives from the government, defense businesses and the military discussed long- term strategic issues related to NATO military capabilities. NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow said at the meeting that from NATO point of view, the forum does not intend to discuss contracts and business opportunities, but it provides unique opportunities to talk about the future development of a common view and common approach between businesses and government officials. "It is the capstone event for the Alliance to hold open dialogue with senior representatives from industry and governments on topics pertaining to defense capability development, to share their own views and experience, and identify solutions to the current security and financial challenges," he said. However, he noted many NATO allies face tough financial challenges as military expenditures decrease, prompting member nations to work together more. The one-day closed-door meeting addresses aims to ensure the Alliance receives the best solutions to military requirements, within expected budget and time constraints. The Forum is sponsored by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and co-organised by Supreme Allied Commander Transformation General Jean-Paul Palomeros and Assistant Secretary General for Defense Investment Patrick Auroy.
