No-confidence motion against Abe Cabinet voted down

A motion of no-confidence in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Cabinet failed in the House of Representatives Tuesday following its joint submission by the Democratic Party and three other Japanese opposition parties in response to Abe's plan to further postpone a hike in the country's consumption tax, Kyodo reported.

In the resolution introduced to the House of Representatives, the main opposition Democratic Party, the Japanese Communist Party, the Social Democratic Party and the People's Life Party called for Abe's resignation, arguing that a second postponement of the tax hike under his leadership signals the failure of his "Abenomics" fiscal policy strategy.

The parties argued that the Cabinet bears a grave responsibility for economic policy errors and is no longer qualified to run the government.
