Pakistan election panel to name caretaker PM

Pakistan\'s election panel will name a caretaker Prime Minister after former ruling party and major opposition failed to reach a consensus, a senior official said Saturday. The Election Commission has to make a decision on Sunday. Former ruling Pakistan People\'s Party and the main opposition Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) had formed an eight-member parliamentary committee to select interim Prime Minister. However, the committee failed to agree on a name despite three days of discussion. Both sides had rejected each other\'s nominees for the highest post who would supervise the May 11 parliamentary elections. Secretary of Election Commission, Ishtiaq Ahmad, said the matter was referred to the Election Commission on Saturday morning. \"We will try to make a decision tonight or tomorrow,\" Ahmad said. The Commission is holding discussion on four names and will choose one with majority, Ahmad said. The National Assembly was dissolved when its constitutional five-year term expired on March 16.
