House of Representatives Speaker Ali Abdel Aal asserted the importance of US military support for Egypt to combat terrorism and prevent its spillover to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea.
Abdel Aal’s remarks came during his meeting with Speaker of the US House of Representatives Paul Ryan and his accompanying Congress delegation, the parliament’s information bureau said in a statement.
During the meeting, Abdel Aal said the Egyptian parliament supported the political leadership’s stance on the importance of the sovereignty and unity of the Syrian soil against any religious, racial, or sectarian division.
He added the parliament was elected after two popular revolutions to prove the rule of law and respect for freedoms and rights, noting that 25 percent of the lawmakers were youth.
He added that 90 women were elected in the new parliament for the first time in its history.
Abdel Aal expressed his wishes to develop friendship between the two Egyptian and US parliaments in the light of the strong strategic ties between the two countries.
Ryan stressed his country’s support for Egypt as a vital and the most important country in the Middle East, saying its stability was very significant for the region.
He said that the US supports democracy rather than certain political parties, so it backs Egypt's elected administration and the parliament.
