The population in the Philippines has increased 1.72 percent annually from 2010 to 2015, reaching a total of 100.98 million, local media reported on Friday.

The Philippine Statistics Authority said the country's population grew by 8.64 million based on the latest census conducted in August last year.

The population of the Philippines stood at 92.34 million in 2010. In 2000, the country's population was 76.51 million.

Of the 18 administrative regions, Region IV-A had the largest population win 14.41 million in 2015, followed by the National Capital Region, 12.88 million and Region III, 11.22 million.

"The combined population of these three regions accounts for about 38.1 percent of the Philippine population in 2015," the statistics bureau said.

The statistics also showed that the Autonomous region in Muslim Mindanao in the south, although not the most populous region, had the fastest population growth rate of 2.89 percent during the census period.

According to the statistics, about one tenth of the country's population work overseas, while the country's unemployment rate reached 5.6 percent, the highest among the five ASEAN founders, namely Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
