Police charge 3 in alleged anti Semitic attack in Sydney suburb

Three people were charged in an alleged anti-Semitic attack in a Sydney suburb in a fight between people leaving a synagogue and others, police said. Police in Bondi said the incident Saturday began when four men and a woman were walking home from a synagogue when eight men began shouting anti-Semitic insults at them, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Sunday. The confrontation escalated into a fight. Police said they arrested two teens and an adult at the scene but the rest of the alleged attackers fled. Sgt. David Rose says all five victims were injured during the attack. \"Some have suffered concussion -- there\'s also a fractured cheekbone, a possible broken nose, lacerations and bruising,\" he said. The injured were taken to an area hospital, where hospital spokesman David Faktor told ABC the victims relayed to him the attack was unprovoked and that they were targeted because they were Jewish. Stepan Kerkyasharin, president of the Anti-Discrimination Board of New South Wales, said he was concerned that anti-Semitic attacks still took place. \"We are a fairly mature society where we have a very clear understanding that we are people of different racial backgrounds,\" he said. \"We have to live together in a manner where we accept diversity and respect diversity.\"
