
Police in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro fired tear gas at protesters as they staged a protest outside the home of the city’s governor. The demonstration which happened on Wednesday night were in support of transparency in government spending and improvements to public services such as health and education. Protesters burned garbage cans and other objects on the street as the confrontations escalated. According to local media, six protesters were arrested and four police officers were injured. A recent wave of protests have swept Brazil, which started last month over a 10-cent hike in bus and subway fares.The protests snowballed into massive nationwide demonstrations against government corruption, high taxes and poor public services.
