Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski has hosted a meeting on Saturday afternoon with Herman Van Rompuy, the President of the European Council. Komorowski introduced to Van Rompuy about the situation in Ukraine, when he presented the results of his phone call on Thursday with Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych and opposition leader Vitali Klitschko. Komorowski emphasized that the EU has a very strong consciousness at this time that it cannot let go of its Eastern partners, it cannot agree to the shedding of blood, nor a withdrawal from the democratic process in the East, including in Ukraine. It is necessary to react against anti-democratic practices, whilst simultaneously building opportunities to stop the rising risk of escalation and open new prospects for the future, said Komorowski. Van Rompuy went on to meet with Polish Premier Donald Tusk who reported that both of them convinced that a radicalization of moods and an escalating conflict in Ukraine in line with interests of neither Ukraine itself, nor Europe or Poland. He went on to say that it is the authorities who must break the chain of violence and that most of the clashes and conflicts had been caused by the militia and special units.
