Prosecutors to wrap up Pistorius murder probe by August

South African prosecutors said Sunday they will seek an adjournment at Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius\'s June court appearance to complete their investigations into the Valentine\'s Day killing of his girlfriend. \"We anticipate that all that is mandatory to complete the investigations shall be wrapped up by or before August,\" the prosecuting authority said in a statement. Pistorius is due to appear before a Pretoria court on June 4, but the prosecutors said the hearing was expected to last just 10 minutes and would be a \"mere postponement for further investigations\". The 26-year-old double amputee known as \"Blade Runner\" for his trademark artificial limbs is charged with the murder of his girlfriend at his upmarket Pretoria home on February 14. The runner claims he shot Reeva Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door in the dead of the night after mistaking her for an intruder. Meanwhile, the City Press newspaper reported that the athletics star had been fined under one million rand ($104,000, 81,000 euros) for undeclared taxes. The fine was imposed after Pistorius revealed during his bail application in February that he earned 5.6 million rand ($585,000, 452,000 euros) a year. He since has lost sponsorships with sports giant Nike and Oakley sunglasses and has reportedly sold one of his houses because of his financial woes. Last week his agent confirmed that Pistorius -- who in March successfully challenged his stringent bail conditions to allow him to travel abroad -- would not compete for the rest of the year to allow him to focus on the case. Prosecutors had said in March that they hoped to go to trial by the end of the year.
