The White House is going through a protocol dilemma regarding the title of former President Bill Clinton who could be the husband of the president if Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton wins Tuesday's election.
If the presidential race ends in favor of the former secretary of state, a unique situation will happen as never a man, let alone a former president, has ever been in the White House as husband of the president.
Some have suggested 'First Gentleman' as a possible title for the former president, preferring it over 'First Mate' but the question remains unanswered.
Lisa Grotts, an etiquette expert, said the dilemma was addressed at the state level. "In the US, we have six female governors, and their husbands unofficially go by First Gentleman. But there are no rules for presidential spouses," she said.
"Once a president, always a president and that will always be his title for life," she said.
Allida Black, an expert on first ladies with the White House Historical Association, said that in terms of protocol, Bill Clinton's "title will stay the same" when he is present with Hillary Clinton at formal events. "It will be President Clinton and former president Clinton." "We went through the same thing with the Bush family," she continued, referring to George HW Bush, the 41st US president, and his son, George W Bush, the 43rd.
"We had President Bush and former president Bush, so when they were together, they were introduced that way, and the Clintons will be introduced the same way as well," Black added.
If Hillary Clinton wins the election, Black said, "the office of presidential protocol, working with the Clintons, will decide how to rename the Office of the First Lady." "If she was married to a person who had not been president, he would have been the First Gentleman, but because Bill Clinton had been president, he is former president, and not the First Gentleman," she said.
As for the role of Bill Clinton if Hillary were to be elected president, the Democratic candidate had suggested that the former president might assume a role in her administration's efforts to revive the economy. Bill Clinton's term at office saw him balance the U.S. budget and create millions of jobs.
He has promised to step away from Clinton Foundation charity if Hillary is elected.
The title of First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS) is normally held by the spouse of the president during the latter's term of office. The holder of the position usually adopts social causes and charity initiatives.
Michelle Obama took up obesity and good nutrition as causes and also gave greater support to veterans and their families. Eleanor Roosevelt held the post from March 1933 to April 1945, during which she held press conferences, travelled across the country, gave lectures and radio broadcasts, and expressed her opinions in newspapers.
