Saudi underscores the importance of implementing chemical weapons convention

Emanating from its policy targeting to dismantle all kinds of mass destruction weapons under a firm and effective control as per Paragraph I of the chemical weapons convention, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia underscored the importance of implementing the agreement as the mere presence and proliferation of those weapons constitute direct threat to the world peace and security. This came in a speech delivered by Saudi ambassador to the Kingdom of Holland Abdullah Al-Shaghroud who is also his country\'s permanent representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons before the 74th session of the Executive Council of OPCW in The Hague today. He reiterated Saudi Arabia\'s call for making the Middle East a mass destruction weapons free zone. Saudi Arabia deplores the postponement of the international conference aiming to rid the Middle East from mass destruction weapons, scheduled to take place in Helsinki, the ambassador said, adding that his country still hopes that the world community would hold this important event. Once again, Saudi Arabia denounced the use of chemical weapons in Syria, leading to the killing and injury of hundreds of innocents. The ambassador also deplored the delay of the world community in coercing Syria to strictly dismantle its chemical arsenal to the satisfaction of its neighbors.
