Second Field Army commander Maj.Gen. Ahmed Wasfi inspected Port Said governorate\'s headquarters, after police withdrew from the restive canal city on Friday. The move came following days of sporadic clashes between anti-government protesters and police. The Army stepped in to fill the void and secure the governorate\'s headquarters and Port Said Security Directorate. Wasfi, meanwhile, said that residents of Port Said are up to the responsibility and respect the army\'s role and help the army in securing vital facilities and establishments. The Armed Forces are committed to preserving the lives of the Port Said people regardless of the sacrifices they will offer to this end, he affirmed.
