The United Nations Security Council has expressed "deep concern" over remarks by the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel would never give the Golan Heights back to Syria.
"Council members expressed their deep concern over recent Israeli statements about the Golan, and stressed that the status of the Golan remains unchanged," Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi, who is president of the council this month, said Tuesday in a statement to the press on behalf of the 15-member council.
Liu said a 1981 Security Council resolution on the Golan Heights stipulated Israel's imposition of legal control over the territory is "null and void and without international legal effect".
Netanyahu said on April 17 during the first Israeli cabinet meeting held on the occupied territory that, "The Golan Heights will remain in the hands of Israel forever".
The European Union has also rejected his remarks. The EU's top diplomat, Federica Mogherini, said on April 20 that the EU didn't recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Heights.
