South Korea is soon expected to arm its F-15K fighter jets with Taurus missiles that can strike key facilities in Pyongyang from the South Korean skies above the Air Force headquarters.
South Korean military officials and the country's weapon's manufacturer confirmed on Tuesday that the US government approved the export of GPS receivers for South Korea to operate the cruise missiles, according to (KBS World News).
Sources said that dozens of Taurus missiles will soon be shipped from Germany to South Korea for deployment within two to three months. An official of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration(DAPA) said that the military will soon put together the missiles with military GPS receivers and the Flight Termination System (FTS).
An Air Force official said that with the 500-kilometer range Tauruses, the South Korean warplanes will be able to launch a precision missile attack at any North Korean target without entering enemy airspace.
Launched from fighter jets flying over the East Sea or above the South Korean military headquarters in the central part of the nation, the weapon can destroy ballistic missile bases in the northeastern part of North Korea within 15 minutes.
A Taurus Systems official emphasized that the cruise missiles will take South Korea's precision strike ability to the next level with the extended striking range.
The Taurus is a key component of South Korea's kill chain preemptive strike system against North Korean nuclear missile threats.
With the stealth capability, Taurus missiles can fly at Mach 0.95 at low altitudes below the air defense artillery range and penetrate into six-meter thick reinforced concrete structures.
