Tantawi reiterates Egypt’s support of Mideast peace

Head of Egypt’s ruling military council Marshal Mohammad Hussein Tantawi on Saturday reiterated his country’s commitment to working for peace in the Middle East. He also pledged that Cairo would pursue its backing of pan-Arab causes at world forums and place Africa at the top of its foreign policy agenda, particularly Nile basin nations. Tantawi, head of the Supreme Military Council which came to power after the downfall of President Hosni Mubarak’s regime, said in remarks coinciding with the anniversary of Egypt’s 1952 revolution that the council would press ahead with building a strong and civil country and consolidate democracy. He also stressed that a robust economy is  key pillar of national security. Tantawi said in a speech to Egyptians that the country had survived many tremendous crises relying on its own efforts and resources, emphasising that the council is keen to build good and balanced relations with all world nations and adhere to all conventions and pacts.
