Abdullah Al-Moallemi
New York - Arab Today

Saudi Arabia has lodged a complaint with the UN Security Council concerning violations committed by Iran against Security Council Resolution 2216 on Yemen.
The Kingdom asked the world community to take measures to stop Iran from committing illegal actions in Yemen.
It was pointed out in the complaint that it was the Kingdom’s right to take appropriate action to confront the threats posed by the pro-Iranian Houthi militias and those of deposed President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
The complaint was submitted on Wednesday night to the Security Council by Abdullah Al-Moallemi, Saudi Arabia’s permanent representative at the United Nations.
The Kingdom said it was subject to random attacks launched by Houthi rebels and their supporters loyal to Saleh. The attacks included the launch of ballistic missiles across the border from Yemen, which resulted in the deaths of civilians, and damage to the civil infrastructure, including schools and hospitals in Najran, Jazan and also in the Asir region.
The report said the total number of ballistic missiles that struck the Kingdom’s territories in recent times was nearly 30. Al-Moallemi said at least one Iran-made ballistic missile, Zilzal 3, was launched into Najran on Aug. 31, 2016.

The Kingdom’s representative confirmed that Iran was supplying the Houthi militias with weapons and ammunition in a flagrant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2216 issued in 2015.
He cited several instances in which foreign naval forces, including those of Australia, the United States and France, had intercepted Houthi-militia-bound vessels laden with illegal weapons shipped from Iran. He added that the US Fifth Fleet had issued a statement on April 4, 2016, confirming that, for the third time in a few weeks, international naval forces operating in the Arabian Sea had confiscated illegal weapons that the US believed were being sent from Iran to the Houthis in Sanaa, Yemen.
Al-Moallemi said the confiscated weapons included, anti-tank Iranian-made missiles, thousands of rifles and Dragonov sniper weapons, AK-47 rifles, mortar pipes, missile shells, and RPJ launchers.
In addition, he said, that most of the crew of the intercepted vessels were Iranians.
He stated that the trafficking of illegal weapons to the Houthi militias and the deposed Ali Abdullah Saleh was not only a violation of UN Security Council resolutions, but also a direct threat to the security of Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the region as well as the peace and security of the world.
He said that the Kingdom confirmed its right to take appropriate measures to confront the threats posed by the Houthis and Saleh’s forces who are financed by Iran.
He added that the Kingdom would spare no effort to protect its security and integrity as well as that of Yemen and the region according to the UN Charter and international law.
He went on to say that the Houthis and Saleh should be held responsible for their criminal and irresponsible behavior as silence would only embolden them to commit more violations that would pose threats to the security and safety of the people of Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the region.
In addition, the commission of additional violations would undermine the authority of UN Security Council resolutions and derail political settlement of the crisis in Yemen.
Al-Moallemi said that the Kingdom called upon the UN Security Council to shoulder its responsibility and take appropriate and necessary measures against those who dare to foil the political transition process in Yemen and against those who breach UN Security Council resolutions pertinent to Resolution 2216, adopted by the Council under the provisions of Chapter 7 of the UN Charter.
He urged the Security Council to take necessary action to convince Iran to commit itself to all Security Council resolutions and to desist from any illegal acts in Yemen.
He reiterated the support of Saudi Arabia to the important work done by UN envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed. The envoy has attempted to reach a comprehensive arrangement to end the conflict in Yemen according to the GCC initiative, the outcomes of the national dialogue in Yemen, its executive mechanisms and the relevant Security Council resolutions.
