The US wants greater special forces and naval cooperation with Gulf states to counter Iran’s “destabilizing activities” in the region, a senior US defense official said on the eve of Obama’s visit to Saudi Arabia, according to Al-Arabiya. The official said Iran’s activities will be countered with “special operations forces and maritime interdiction.” The US is proposing to help train Gulf special forces and develop their naval capacity to prevent Iran from supporting Shiite groups in the region, the official said.
