UN chief calls for end of violence in Egypt

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Friday called on the Egyptian security forces to protect demonstrators and prevent violent clashes following the latest developments in the unfolding crisis in Egypt. \"The Secretary-General believes strongly that this is a critical juncture in which it is imperative for Egyptians to work together to chart a peaceful return to civilian control, constitutional order, and democratic governance,\" said a statement issued here by Ban\'s spokesperson. Egypt\'s political leaders have a responsibility to show their commitment to a peaceful and democratic dialogue which includes all of Egypt\'s constituencies, said the statement, which also urged Egyptians to exercise their right to demonstrate \"by peaceful means\". \"The way forward should be determined by the people of Egypt themselves, in a manner that respects the full diversity of Egyptian political views,\" said Ban, following reports that some protesters have been killed or wounded by security forces, especially those of sexual violence. In the statement, Ban also expressed the confidence that the Egyptian people will be able to successfully address the challenges that Egypt currently faces. He pledged to foster a strong partnership with Egypt to support a peaceful transition to a representative and democratic governance. Egypt\'s armed forces removed President Mohammed Morsi from his post on Wednesday after days of massive protests against him due to his \"poor performance\" since he was elected president last June. Clashes erupted Friday between Morsi\'s opponents and supporters in several governorates across the country including capital Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Qena, Assiut, Fayoum and North Sinai.
