UN committed to fight against LRA

Though the group has largely been driven from parts of central Africa, the United Nations said it remains committed to combating the Lord\'s Resistance Army. A 30-minute video posted on YouTube from the advocacy group Invisible Children has gained international attention since it was filed last week. Dubbed \"Kony 2012,\" it aims to generate attention to atrocities allegedly committed by Joseph Kony, the leader of Ugandan rebel group LRA. Abou Moussa, the UN special envoy for Central Africa, said a multilateral meeting was scheduled for next week in Uganda to outline a strategy to combat the LRA. \"I would like to reaffirm the support of the United Nations for the African Union\'s regional cooperation initiative against the LRA,\" Moussa said in a statement from Gabon. The United Nations said the LRA is suspected of massacres in regional villages and is notorious for its use of child solders. The world body said since 2004, only remnants of the group remain. There\'s been a rise in attacks attributed to the LRA in 2012, however. Kony remains at large despite a 2005 indictment by the International Criminal Court on more than 30 counts of violations of international law, including war crimes. Invisible Children has since been criticized for oversimplifying the issue.
