UN envoy describes peaceful transition occurred in Yemen as miracle

UN Secretary-General's envoy to Yemen on Monday described the peaceful power transition occurred in Yemen, the second in the world for highly rates of weapons possession, as a miracle. "What happening in Yemen of a peaceful power transition is a miracle in a country ranked the second highest in the world for weapons possession," Jamal Benomar said during his meeting with representatives of youth components participating in the National Dialogue Conference (NDC). He said that involve Yemen's youth in the political life and dialogue was unprecedented step that has not happened in the Arab Spring countries, adding that they were more dynamic in the NDC preparatory stage, which lasted for six months. "All the slogans you chanted during your revolution are similar to the United Nations' ones of human rights and the rule of law," Benomar said. "Therefore we have tried to show our solidarity with the youths' efforts." Benomar said that the experience of youths in Yemen is a source of inspiration for the UN and other countries. "We must study this experience. Youth's role must not end in the post-dialogue stage. You have to continue and to think seriously to participate in decision-making in Yemen." The UN envoy said that the national dialogue reached its final stage which is the most important one. "This is an important stage that requires a change in the long term aiming to create a new state with new values, to agree on the political game's rules and to agree on a new social contract. This process is difficult and challenging and needs more patience and wisdom." Benomar revealed a lot of maneuvers and obstacles that taken place from some parties. "Every day, we hear news that can only be described as obstacles. The Yemenis have been fed up with what has happened, and want a change and build a better Yemen." He said some of the most important unsettled issues in the national dialogue are the state's political system and transitional justice, pointing that solving some issues was delayed intentionally and some delayed due to preparations that require a longer phase. He explained that the underway debate in the NDC Conciliation Committee revolves around the arrangements for the post-stage dialogue.
