UN: Syrian refugee numbers soar in Turkey, Jordan

The number of Syrians fleeing to neighbouring Turkey and Jordan is rising, according to data issued by the UN refugee agency on Tuesday in Geneva and quoted by dpa. Up to 5,000 refugees have been arriving in Turkey each day over the past 14 days, compared to around 500 in the previous weeks, said Melissa Fleming, spokeswoman of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In Jordan, the number of people arriving at the Zaatri camp has doubled. More than 10,000 were registered in the past week. The UNHCR said it had counted a total of 214,000 Syrian refugees as of Sunday, nearly 12,000 more than it had reported on Friday.
