The US Embassy in Cairo announced that it will be closed to the public on Sunday July 28 with regular consular services suspended. “We regret the inconvenience. If you had an appointment for American Citizens Services on that day, please reschedule your appointment,” the embassy said in a statement. “As a matter of general practice, US citizens should avoid areas where large gatherings may occur. Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence,” according to the statement. The embassy urged US citizens in Egypt to monitor local news reports and to plan their activities accordingly. The Embassy also reminded US citizens to review their personal security plans and remain alert to their surroundings at all times in Egypt.
