US Rejects ICC War Crimes Probe in Afghanistan

The United States rejected a report by the International Criminal Court (ICC) that US soldiers and CIA agents may have committed war crimes in Afghanistan over the past decade.

    State Department's Spokesperson Elizabeth Trudeau said in a press release "We do not believe that an ICC examination or investigation with respect to the actions of US personnel in relation to the situation in Afghanistan is warranted or appropriate." "We have a robust national system of investigation and accountability that is as good as any country in the world," Trudeau said. "The United States is not a party to the Rome Statute and has not consented to ICC jurisdiction," she added. 

    ICC chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said on Monday said she is contemplating whether to launch a full-fledged investigation into allegations that US soldiers and CIA operators tortured Afghan prisoners between 2003 and 2014.
