US State department notes Algerian progress of press and women liberty

US State department indicated in its new world report on human rights that progress were made in Algeria in the field of press liberty and women political emancipation.It also noted, however, insufficiencies in justice notably the prolonged pretrial detention.In a report published Friday on the assessment of human rights situation in the world, the State Department notably broached the civil liberties, the political rights, the fight against corruption, women and workers rights.In the section on Algeria, the report underlines that concerning press liberty, Algerian journalists and cartoonists ‘‘regularly criticize the government,’’ while the political parties, including those with Islamist orientation, ‘‘have access to the independent press in which they express their opinions.”The opposition parties can ‘‘publish information via internet and issue communiqués.’’However, noted the report, the journalists ‘‘voice their frustration concerning the difficulties faced to have access to information with government officials.”The State department indicated that \"no cases of government interference were signaled in terms of editing and publishing books during 2012’’.
