US voices concern on Iraq violence

The US expressed its \"deep concern\" late Monday about the recent levels of violence in Iraq which have killed more than 290 people since the start of the holy month of Ramadan. \"We\'re encouraged that many political and religious leaders have taken a strong stance against this violence, and that they have continued to explore ways to address ongoing political and security issues,\" said Jennifer Psaki, Spokesperson for the US State Department. \"US officials in Baghdad and Washington remain intensely engaged with senior Iraqi leaders to support their efforts to resolve differences through direct dialogue and the political process.\" A wave of attacks by gunmen and suicide bombings in the last few months have raised concerns about Iraq succumbing to widespread sectarian bloodshed, but Psaki responded by insisting the US will \"continue to work with leaders to overcome the threat of terrorism and their efforts to bring justice to those who continue to perpetrate such despicable crimes.
