US welcomes formation of new Tunisian government

US Secretary of the State John Kerry welcomed Wednesday the formation of a new Tunisian government under Prime Minister Ali Larayedh. Kerry urged Tunisian leaders and politicians to work side by side to rise above their disputes and seek their country's higher interest. "We encourage Tunisia s leaders to work together quickly to finalize a constitution that respects universal human rights, and to develop a plan for elections so Tunisians can vote on their country s future," Kerry said in a statement released by the Department of State. "Announcing a fixed election date will provide clarity about the direction of Tunisia democratic transition and will help stabilize the political, security, and economic situation." The top US diplomat hoped that the new government can promote a suitable environment that imposes rule of law, justice, and accountability. "We look to the Government of Tunisia to foster an environment of justice and accountability that is conducive to a free and fair election process, including freedom of the press and access for domestic and international observers," he elaborated. "The United States remains a friend of the Tunisian people and will continue to support the transition to an enduring democracy in which the rights of all Tunisians are respected and protected," the statement added. Tunisian lawmakers approved a new government that the ruling Islamist Ennahda party hopes will quell tensions over the killing of an opposition leader and a resurgence in religious activity. The new prime minister pledged immediately to reduce violence, boost the economy,speed up work toward elections, and a new constitution for Tunisia.
